Tracts and evangelizing materials

Norwegian Lutheran Mission (NLM) is called to reach the unreached with the Gospel. This is a never-ending task, and Scripture Mission Literature must see this as their calling as well. Therefore, we continue to produce booklets and pamphlets with an evangelizing aim, in order to reach out to those who have not yet received Christ, or they have not managed to build trust in their faith.

Throughout the years a number of different pamphlets ("tracts") have been printed and spread all over East Africa. However, most of these pamphlets will need a refreshing both in language and layout before reprinting them again sometime in 2010. Although the number of available pamphlets is very low at the moment, it will hopefully see a solid rise during this year.

At the moment, we distribute the following tracts:

Majaribu na uaminifu (Attempts and trust)
Kuushinda Uchawi na Ushirikina (To win over the black arts and its perfomers)

They grow stronger together

- This has been very well for us all, very encouraging and motivating.

This was the comment from many of the Bible school staff members attending the first workshop of the Bible school network in East Africa hosted in December 2008. The cooperation continues this year, as there will be a new workshop in April, with Scripture Mission in the role as main network coordinator.

On their own
Previously, there were very little communication or cooperation between the Lutheran Bible schools in East Africa. Many years ago, the principals met annually, but the latter years the schools have had to make their own experiences and work hard to provide the neccessary materials and resources - all on their own.

In December 2008, representatives from three of the schools met for the first time to share experience and visions. This was the first time ever for more than the principals to meet together. Representatives from all of the three schools that the Norwegian Lutheran Mission is cooperating with attended; the Bible school at Waama in Tanzania has been nationalized, however at the schools in Kiabakari in Northern Tanzania and Kapenguria (Pokot, Kenya) there are still missionaries.

This workshop was the beginning of what we hope to become a larger network for the Bible schools in East Africa.

New connections
The workshop's main objective was to make an initial connection between the three schools, in order to let them exchange experience and ideas concerning healthy Bible school administration and teaching, as well as talking through their needs for literature. Moreover, it is a part of Scripture Mission Arusha's strategy as well; to initiate a network of Bible schools and help them with good literature. The workshop discussion showed that the Bible schools need a lot more books in Swahili, e.g. on ethics, pastoral care and diaconia.

Fruitful discussion
- Our discussions will make us able to improve our schools, the principal of Waama, Zakaria Dallei, said. Israel Saghware, a teacher at the same school, felt the workshop contributed to create a long-lasting unity amongst the contestants.

The next workshop is due the first week after Easter 2010, then in Kapenguria in Pokot.

Why books?

Literature ministry provides a wonderful way of spreading the Gospel. Do not misunderstand: It is crucial with preachers and evangelists going from town to town preaching.

But the preacher will eventually leave the village. The books will stay. Books do not have a "best before" label, but are sustainable through many years. There will never be a problem with an empty battery or dysfunctional electrical current. Books are relatively cheap to produce, and thus cheap to buy. They are easy to bring along, and can be read over and over again, never changing its message. In many villages a book will be read on turns by the majority of the population.

Maybe it is not such a wonder why God himself chose a book to make his own will known?

I the Northern and Western countries - the so-called Christian countries, almost every household has its own Bible. In Tanzania this is far from the situation. A lot of the population cannot afford such a luxury item. Moreover, it might be hard to find a bookshop selling a Bible or any other Christian book helping people to read and understand the Bible. Self study books and devotional might hardly be found at all.

These are some of the reasons why Scripture Mission is producing and selling such literature. Through the Bible, people can connect to God himself - directly, and get to know Him who created them and who gave His life for them. That is the reason why we are here in Tanzania.

Riziki is back!

After a break of nine years with no publications, editors Joakim Ami and Kristin Wennemo Malmin finally presented a new issue of the magazine RIZIKI on Monday.

Riziki means daily bread. Our goal is that Riziki may be a daily bread for the many hundreds of pastors and evangelists throughout Tanzania who have few opportunities to get any kind of input for their ministry.

The magazine is in A5 format and has 16 pages. Everything is in Swahili. Each issue has its theme - in the first issue it is about being a good servant. Every issue also contains a devotion and one person's special witness, as well as columns on home/family and health.

Joakim Ami (picture) and Kristin Wennemo Malmin are co-editors. They work together with an editorial committee, which hopefully will get more crowded in the time to come.

A text-based ministry

Scripture Mission was established in 1985, and moved into its current premises in the Sakina area of Arusha in 1992. We run a bookshop in our compound, selling Christian literature from many publishers, along with Scripture Mission cassettes and Bibles. Our licences limit us from selling other goods, but we don’t believe it is our calling to sell stationary anyway!

We produce some Christian learning materials, and we run a Bible School through correspondence, with approximately 65 students currently enrolled in one of the 8 courses we provide. Moreover, we produce the magazine Riziki, targeting pastors and evangelists. The last years we have put an effort into networking between East African Bible schools as well.

Scripture Mission Tanzania was established with the following aims and objectives:

A. To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ as it relates to the whole man, through

preaching and teaching the Word of God

production, printing and distribution of Christian literature, Christian correspondance courses, cassettes and audiovisual means, etc.

educational establishments, including training of personell, scholarships etc.

B. To serve and assist national churches in Evangelistic and social programs.

C. To undertake other Christian and/or charitable tasks which from time to time are considered appropriate.

D. To provide most timely and appropriate response to sudden and catastrophich human need.

E. All objects are non-political.
